Anatomy of a Sapsun chirava

The blade

Serrated steel, etched with our mark

ബ്ലേഡ്

A rounded steel head with sharp teeth all the way around, so it scrapes clean to the shell. The Sapsun logo is etched into the steel.

The arm

A curved black arm, bolted twice

കൈപ്പിടി

The arm curves out from the wooden post to hold the blade at the right height. Two steel bolts at each end keep it from working loose.

മഹാഗണി

From the land of Nilambur teak

Malabar has been growing fine wood for 180 years

Sapsun Store comes from Malappuram, a short drive from Nilambur. This is where the world's oldest teak plantation still stands, and where Kerala learned to work with wood that lasts.

  • 1840sTeak planting begins in Nilambur under H. V. Conolly, then Collector of Malabar.
  • TodayConolly's Plot is protected as the world's oldest teak plantation, beside the Chaliyar river.
  • In townKFRI's Teak Museum in Nilambur tells the story of the tree, from seed to timber.

Teak · തേക്ക്

Natural oils help it shrug off water. The tree Nilambur is famous for.

Mahogany · മഹാഗണി

Dense, deep red, polishes to a shine. Used for the chirava and boards.

Care guide

Wood lasts when you treat it like wood

A few habits keep your chirava and boards in shape for years.

Wash
Rinse with water and mild soap right after use. Do not soak or put it in a dishwasher.
Dry
Wipe dry and let it stand so air reaches every side. Keep it out of direct sun.
Oil
Once a month, rub a thin coat of coconut oil into the wood and leave it overnight.
Blade
Brush coconut out of the teeth with a small brush and dry the steel before storing.
